Artemis: Ultra-Wideband solution.
Ultra-Wideband solution enabling large-scale indoor localisation
The Ultra-Wideband (UWB) large-scale localization system is an advanced solution designed to locate a wide number of tags in areas of any size, aiming to support Industry 4.0 applications. This system relies on Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, which is supported by a Time-Division Multiple Access (TDMA) protocol appropriately implemented across all UWB devices. Moreover, the system employs a distance measurement method called Two-Way Ranging (TWR), allowing for precise and reliable measurements.
The Artemis solution, representing one implementation of this system, comprises several key components. Among these are the tags, which are attached to the mobile objects to be tracked, and anchor nodes, positioned at predefined locations within the area of interest. Additionally, there are GW Anchors, providing UWB and IP connectivity via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A fundamental element of the solution is the Localization Manager, which executes an algorithm based on the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to accurately compute the tag’s position.
An important aspect to highlight is that, since distance measurements are based on the TWR method, anchor node synchronization is not required. This significantly simplifies the deployment phase of the fixed infrastructure, reducing costs and installation times.
A significant feature of the Artemis solution is its flexibility in adapting to various situations and application contexts. For example, the tag can be attached to mobile objects equipped with a sufficient power source to also power the tag itself, such as forklifts or Automatic Mobile Robots (AMRs). However, it is essential to emphasize that the system is equally suitable for locating individuals, ensuring high accuracy and reliability in position determination.
The Artemis solution has been tested in a real industrial environment, demonstrating a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 7. Although primarily conceived to meet the needs of Industry 4.0, this solution can be readily adapted for use in other application domains.
