JUST STREETS is a Horizon Europe project that aims to (re)design urban streets by putting active mobility—walking and cycling—at the centre, creating public spaces that are more sustainable, safe, and genuinely inclusive. The project promotes a tangible transition: moving from streets conceived primarily for cars to streets that fairly redistribute space, time, and urban environmental quality in favour of people.

The project is driven by the co-creation of solutions to be implemented on streets (e.g., tactical urbanism, school streets, and the removal of on-street car parking), by listening to and amplifying the perspectives of groups often under-represented in urban planning—particularly women, migrants, older adults, children, LGBTQI+ people, and people with disabilities.

A consortium of 32 international partners supports 12 cities (including Milan, London, Amsterdam, Vilnius, Riga, Braga, Cugir, and Kozani) in rethinking and delivering street transformations, while documenting results, impacts, and lessons learned.

The knowledge generated—strategies, processes, indicators, and replicable solutions—is then shared with other European cities interested in similar pathways through the Twin Cities programme. JUST STREETS is not simply a set of interventions: it represents a paradigm shift in how public space is planned and designed, viewing the street as social, environmental, and health infrastructure in the service of everyone.
